“You could never know what it’s like, your blood like winter freezes just like ice, and there’s a cold lonely light that shines from you” lyrics from song, “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John

January 28, 2026

  • Because of prior commitments we didn’t go out Saturday, January 24 nor this Saturday, January 31, but we went out during the week and met up with a few of our friends.  On Wednesday, we met a new friend sitting outside of a donut shop with his head down.  I asked him if he “needed some help”.  He lifted his head and recognized my truck and his eyes lit up.  His name was (Jose) and he kept saying “thank you” after I gave him our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card, hat and gloves.
  • We sometimes wonder what is going through our friends’ minds when we see them in such despair.  Some of our friends don’t solicit money with a cup on a corner; they rely on the generosity of strangers.  When looking into their eyes it tells the story of sadness and despair.  There are people who are gifted with compassion and empathy who feel God’s presence in a stranger.  Then there are others who are blind to the human suffering of our friends and look at them as an eyesore passing by them as though they were invisible.
  • We ran into a long-time friend (Robbie) who was woken up by police last night as he slept in a snowbank.  If they had not spotted him, he would have died with the temperature at 12° outside.  Some of our friends have told us one of the local hospitals has allowed them into their lobby to stay warm during these frigid days.
  • We ran into our regular friends and fixed them up with gloves, hand warmers, hats, hooded sweatshirts, sweatpants, socks, snacks, and our packets.  With the cold and being it was during the week, we only saw half of our friends.
  • We ran into our friend who was grieving the loss of her and our friend (Henry) a couple of weeks ago.

“In hearing this cry of the poor, we are asked to enter into the heart of God”.  Pope Leo
