“Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven?” lyrics from song, “Tears in Heaven” by Eric Clapton
May 23, 2026
Today we had the privilege of serving 37 people.
- This Saturday’s street report is the hardest one to write to date. Our friend Carrie (her real name, who I used to refer to as Kathy), died from an overdose Sunday 24 hours after we saw her. She had been released from jail on Thursday after a court appearance. She was let back out on the street and was interviewing with a recovery house via Zoom on Friday. When we met with her on Saturday, she was excited and scared of making the move to the recovery house in Lynn. I think she was more worried of being back on the street with nothing in her system. We had hoped she would have gone straight from court to Lynn, but obviously this didn’t happen. We gave her clothes, snacks and encouragement. Of all the friends we have met on the street she was the one closest to our hearts. We would plead with her to go into treatment not only for her but for her daughter who is being raised by her brother. She would talk about her younger days playing sports against rival towns, especially after we would give her a hoodie or baseball hat from a rival town. For our friends, these memories seem so distant as they stand on a street corner trying to figure out if they should turn left or right at the intersection. I need to keep wiping my eyes as I write this. She always told us how much she loved us, and we would hug her and tell her the same. Carrie, you will always live in our hearts, we love you so much.
- We met a new friend (Jerry) who was packing up his belongings into a backpack after sleeping in a doorway. We asked him if he needed some help. He looked puzzled at this question until I held up our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card. When we asked where he was from, he replied, “Worcester”. He ended up here after he was asked to leave a shelter out there. We were able to fix him up with socks, underwear, tee shirts. He told us he got a job in a local junkyard to get enough money to get his ID’s back that were lost. We told him to go to L Street and talk to Peg. He wasn’t sure where it was, so we gave him directions and another one of our friends (Mary) said she would walk him there. What was most interesting is he was reading the prayer card as we were talking to him. I think Jim was connecting with him as he kept reading. Jim would always say we need to show our friends the “Love of Christ”.
“To live in hearts, we leave behind is to never die”. RIP Carrie.
“Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die”. John 11:25
