“Will the circle be unbroken, by and by Lord, by and by there’s a better home awaiting in the sky Lord, in the sky”. Lyrics from song, “Can the Circle be Unbroken” by the Carter Family

Today, we had the privilege of serving 34 people.
- Another Saturday with more sad news. Bobby, our friend who we referred to as (Robbie), died in his wheelchair the other day. Bobby was a true kind soul. We talked a lot about his physical struggles. Many times, he would leave the hospital AMA to return to his street family. Originally from the North Shore, when asked about any blood family, he spoke of his daughter who lived in New Hampshire and who he hadn’t spoken to in 14 years. I always wonder how this gentle soul, without any noticeable addictions, became a resident of the street. Was it a tragedy, loss of job, hard times? We will never know. He would tell me he just wanted to someday sit in the sun on Nantasket Beach. We were hoping to someday make that happen if he got well enough. The disturbing part of his death is that he sat in his wheelchair deceased for 5 hours until the coroner came. Our friends, because of their lifestyle, lose their dignity in the end. RIP my good friend. Don’t forget your sunglasses in God’s shining light. In Bobby’s remembrance, we held on to his wheelchair and offered prayers for him.
- The rest of the morning didn’t get much better. We ran into our friend (Kathy). She was alone; she’s usually with her husband (Shane). When we asked where he was she replied, “He’s back at the tent”. We knew this was not true because earlier we heard he was in jail. When she commented about how she was gaining weight I could not restrain myself. I told her, “You look worse than I have ever seen you”. She probably weights about 90 lbs. Hugging her is like hugging a broomstick. Her eyes immediately filled up with tears and she started crying. We hugged her and told her we loved her, but she needs to make a change in her life. The fear of this decision is as great as not having anything in their system to make them feel normal. I personally watched as my son Mike struggled with this life changing decision for 15 years until his addiction won and God called him home. The ripple effect is devastating. As we drove away from (Kathy) I looked in the rear-view mirror and watched her collect everything we gave her…I had a lump in my throat.
