“When I find myself in times of trouble Mother Mary comes to me speaking words of wisdom, let it be”. Lyrics from song “Let it Be” by The Beatles

October 31, 2026

Today we had the privilege of serving 50 people.

  • We were out early this morning while it was still cold and with little sun.  We ran into our friend (Shane).  He was cold and talking about the fact he doesn’t think he can survive another winter on the streets.  The good thing is he started talking about sectioning himself into treatment which he can easily do.  We can only hope and pray he does.  We gave him a new winter coat, sweatpants, hat, gloves, blanket with a carrying bag.
  • As we were finishing up with him, a crowd of younger, new friends showed up (Tom, Tige, Kathleen).  (Tige) was visibly shaking from the cold.  We asked him if he needed a winter jacket and he nodded.  We noticed he was wearing crocs and asked if he needed sneakers and he replied, “no”.  He wasn’t very verbal but with each thing we gave him he started to lighten up.  Just when he thought we were all done with him, we handed him our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card and he replied with “thank you”.
  • Also, in the group of our younger friends was (Kathleen) who is the sister of our regular friend (Courtney) who’s back in jail.  (Kathleen) told us she has a 24-year-old and a 7-year-old at home.  We can only imagine what her kids are feeling while their mother is struggling to survive out here as a slave to her addiction.  We also fixed her up with sweatpants, hat, gloves, socks, underwear, sweatshirt.  Her sneakers were all beaten up and we found a pair that fit her.  We mentioned to her to go by L St mission to get some breakfast.
  • On the other side of town, we ran into our friend (Lee) who we have not seen in a month.  She was barely verbal.  We got her to smile and fixed her up with some clothes.  She was with (Ray) who keeps an eye on her and helps her walk.  We both agreed she displays the early signs of wet brain where they can’t verbalize and understand what you are saying to them. She is a veteran of the streets and after a while her body and now her mind are starting to break down.
  • On our last stop we saw a lot of our friends waiting for us.  One of our friends (Eugene) was commenting about our sweatshirts with the three-nail cross saying he prays during the day.  He then asked me to say a prayer for him right there.  I asked, “God watch over our friend (Eugene) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ”.  He then proceeded to show us all the crucifixes he had around his neck.  We believe that prayer meant more than our packet and socks, underwear, snacks.

If anyone says, “I love God and yet hates his brother or sister is a liar.  For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen”.  CSB
