“There are places I’ll remember all my life, though some have changed, some forever not for better, some have gone and some remain” lyrics from song, “In My Life” by the Beatles

Today we had the privilege of serving 38 people.
- We had an interesting morning for sure. With the warm weather a lot of our friends were out early. Our first stop was where our dear friend Carrie had passed away. Liz brought a bouquet of flowers along with her picture and placed them by the creek where they found her.
- We ran into our friends at the usual spot. When we pulled up there were only a few of them and then gradually more people started showing up. As we were giving out socks, underwear, tee shirts, packets, snacks, Gatorade and water, we noticed one of our friends (James) became very quiet. I asked if he needed anything. He replied, “No, I am having social anxiety right now”. I think he got a little overwhelmed with the amount of our friends who showed up. I told him, “I get it – no worries”. I had picked up some women’s shorts because we had more men’s than women’s. The funny thing is some of our friends insist on being color coordinated and passed on a particular color of shorts or shirt.
- Our next stop was an eye opener. As we were handing out our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card, to our friends along with clothes, snacks, Gatorade and water, I noticed a smaller gentleman who I’d seen a couple of times before. I introduced myself to him and he told me his name (Brian). He said that I looked familiar. We began talking about where we were from. We are both from the city, Dorchester and Hyde Park. When I asked what his last name was, it dawned on me I met him almost 20 years ago when he had his own company and was very successful. We hugged and I asked him what happened. He told us he lost everything through bad decisions and was currently doing small jobs to get some money. I gave him my number and told him if we can help please call. As I have written before, every one of our friends has a story about when life goes sideways.
- On one of our last stops we saw our friend (Daryl) whose physical appearance has declined in the last month. He is skin and bones. When we spoke to him, he started crying saying he needs to make a change. “I can’t keep going like this,” he said. We talked to him about some options and that he should talk to Peg; I gave him my number. The sad part is we can’t make that decision – they must. We hope and pray and continue to make ourselves available.
“And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven”. James 5:15
