“Now I’m not looking for absolution, forgiveness for the things I do, but before you come to any conclusions, try walking in my shoes” Lyrics from song, “Walking in My Shoes” by Depeche Mode
July 4, 2026
Today we had the privilege of serving 35 people.
- Because of the holiday, today was a little different. The buses weren’t running and our friends were not at the usual spots. We drove around to some different spots and pulled up to a new friend (TJ) who was sitting in front of a fast food restaurant. When we pulled up to him he looked puzzled. When we asked if he could use some help he looked even more confused until I held up our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card and he replied, “yes”. We fixed him up with clothes that fit him and a backpack, along with snacks, Gatorade, water. He started to tell us how he had to sleep outside last night because the shelter was full. He gave us a brief history of his life over the last 20 years and being without a place to really call home. He explained that he was new to this town and didn’t’ really know where he could get a meal or where to go. We spoke to him about L Street Mission and to look up our friend Peg. We gave him our cards along with Peg’s card and wished him well and he said to us, “God bless you guys” as we drove away. But as we drove away we felt troubled, especially Liz, when talking about the buses not running. How would he get to L Street Mission? He had a job interview set up for Monday with a fence company. We drove back to where we saw him and he was sitting in the same spot. We told him to jump in and gave him a ride to L Street. During the ride he mentioned he had been praying to Jesus that he needed a backpack and there we were. It made us feel like “Amazon for Jesus” (LOL).
- We ran into an old friend (Amy) who we hadn’t seen in a while. She was with our friend (Shane) who just lost his wife, Carrie. He just keeps medicating himself so he doesn’t have to feel anything. (Amy) was covered with open sores that she most likely keeps scratching. We were able to fix them both up with our packet, clothes, snacks, hygiene stuff.
- On one of our stops we finally ran into our friend (Ray) who found a new doorway to sleep in. He had his cardboard walls around him with his big Bowie knife by his head. We noticed he was still wearing the scars of the open wounds on his arm. He’s always happy to see us. When we asked if he needed anything else, he always replies, “a million dollars” (LOL).
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” Psalm-147:3
