“Last night I dreamed an angel came, he took my hand, he called my name, he bid me look the other way; I saw a man, I heard him say” lyrics from song, “I Saw a Man” by Johnny Cash

This week we had the privilege of serving 42 people.
- It was an interesting week to say the least. I had the privilege of meeting (Jim, Mike and Larry) at Father Bill’s Shelter in Quincy. My friend Bob and I shared our experience, strength and hope with them. We listened to their stories of how they ended up at Father Bill’s. Each shared the familiar story of once having a job and living a normal life until it all went sideways, whether from a loss of a job or their addiction. We offered some suggestions and help, stressing any change needs to come from within. They were very appreciative of our $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card.
- With the warm weather starting, many of our friends were out early. We brought clementines with us along with the usual Oreos, Cheez-Its, Gatorade, water. Our friends commented on how much they liked the clementines. We gave out a lot of sweatpants, socks and underwear. We kidded with our friends (Rosie, Jack) after we gave them a carry-on bag to keep their belongings in saying to them in case you have to move quickly, hopefully into treatment, which still gets push-back.
- We ran into a new friend (Brittany) who was with our friend (Gary). She was explaining to Majella how she had been beaten up again. You could see her black eye. The sad part is we only hear one version of their story which got us to thinking when we ran into (Gary) who flagged us down later and asked if we gave (Brittany) our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card. We told him yes, and he replied, “I thought so”. She lied to him and said she didn’t get one. Situations like this can quickly escalate to violence, especially with women who are easy targets for bullies. A lot of our women friends cover their bruises and scrapes with cheap makeup and deny the actions of their boyfriends or husbands when we question them about the black eyes and bruises. It’s very sad; they may have come from a home life where this was the norm, the scars can run deeper than flesh.
“Come to me all you who are tired from carrying your heavy loads, and I will give you rest”. Matthew 11:28
