“In restless dreams, I walked alone narrow streets of cobblestone” lyrics from song “Sound of Silence” by Simon and Garfunkel

On Tuesday and Saturday, we had the privilege of serving 16 people.

  • We helped serve a Christmas dinner at the men’s shelter on Tuesday.  We met some new friends who were startled when we gave them our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card.  One of our new friends quietly came up to us and asked if we had any more of the DD cards and $10 bill.  We had a few left and gave him one and his eyes opened wide.  While serving them we quietly struck up a conversation being careful how we gave him the packet.  In a room full of 100 men, we could easily set off a huge commotion if people saw what we were giving out.  Before we left, we gave the staff a bunch of hats and gloves that had been donated through the New Quincy City Club.
  • On Saturday, Claire and I were in Boston for our nephew’s wedding.  I had some time to kill so I went walking through a high-end mall attached to the hotel where we were staying.  I had walked through this mall many times while I was working construction in Boston, but now I have a different pair of eyes.  Back then, I paid no attention to the number of street friends that try to get warm in the main concourse before the stores opened.
  • I ran into (Frank) with his head down talking to himself, trying not to make too much noise and trying to not attract the attention of the security guard.  I asked him if he needed some help and held out our packet and he said, “oh yes!”  I asked how he was doing and he proceeded to tell me he slept at the local shelter and then talked about all the losses and tragedies he has experienced in his life.  He was grateful for the packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card.  Now he could get something to eat.  I thought how strange for him to be sitting on a bench in front of a store with shoes in the window that cost $800.  I wished him well and God bless and then ran into a few more friends trying to keep warm and trying not to draw the attention of the security guards.  I believe it’s in the service to others that we find our greatest purpose to God.  Jim and Terry knew that.

“For we walk by faith not by sight.” Corinthians 5:7
