“I thought I'd make it the day you went away but I can't make it 'til you come home again to stay” lyrics from song, “Photograph” by Ringo Starr
January 3, 2026
Today we had the privilege of serving 37 people.
- I listened to the song, “Photograph” and got to thinking how the parents, relatives, friends and loved ones feel while our friends survive on the streets as another day, month, and year pass, with only a photograph and a memory of their loved ones that still leaves a hole in their hearts. Claire and I experienced this first-hand as our son, Mike fell victim to his addiction and the street. In the end we were left with just a memory and a granite stone. To live in the hearts we leave behind is not to die.
- With the extreme cold, hats, gloves, socks, sweatpants were in demand. Our friend (Susan) has luckily been staying with her daughter in this weather with her wheel chair. Her daughter thanked us for supporting her mother over these past couple of years.
- We were sad to hear our friend (Henry) was back in the hospital with a possible stroke. He is going to be moved to another hospital and his friend (Lee) is going to keep us updated.
- We were driving down the street and noticed a gentleman get off the bus and walk in front of us. We asked him “could you use some help?” and he replied, “no I’m all set.” When we held up our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card, his eyes widened and he replied, “oh yes!” We pulled over and asked him if he needed a hat and gloves and he said “yes”. With each thing we gave him, socks, snacks, Gatorade, you could see his eyes fill with tears. He replied, “you made my year, it’s so cold”. Liz and I both agreed it was our highlight of the morning.
- We ran into (Amy) and (Jack) who we had not seen in a year. (Amy) looked good and was still trying to stay clean and is working with the clinic and Peg to get her daughter back into her life.
- We ran into our friends (Kathy) and (Shane) who had blankets draped over them and were walking very slowly. We are worried because they didn’t look good. The cold is doing a number on them. We gave them more blankets, gloves, boots, snacks. We hugged them and told them we loved them, but it was so sad as they walked slowly away heading toward their tent, like walking back into the abyss. We hope and pray that God opens their hearts so they can seem Him.
