“I have lived both sides of the story, rock bottom and glory, so I understand brother it’s time to lay down your burdens, sister you’re hurtin’ so, lift up your hands”. Lyrics from song “Praise Opens Prisons” by Zach Williams
August 22, 2026
Today we had the privilege of serving 46 people.
- We had a very busy morning with our friends in many groups all around the city. We ran into our friend (Kay) who was with (Danny) sleeping under a gazebo in the back of a building. We pulled up to them from a distance, and they didn’t move so we walked over to them, and they recognized us and got up. They initially thought we were there to kick them out. We gave them some clothes, a backpack and snacks along with our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card.
- We ran into our friend (Jerry) who was very sick. We kept saying he needed to make a change in his life. We encouraged him to go to L Street Mission and speak to Peg about treatment. We can only pray he does. The sad part is a lot of our friends don’t feel worthy of anything good in their lives, even God’s love. When we talk to them, we tell them, “You can give up one thing to have everything or give up everything to have one thing”.
- We ran into our friend (Dan) who is in rough shape. We made him aware that his picture was shown on the Facebook page of a police department the next town over. His reply was “they have not issued a warrant yet”. We tried to convince him to get help and get off the street. His family reached out to him to tell him about the Facebook post and tried to convince him to seek help. I know first-hand the anguish his family is going through, not knowing when that dreaded phone call could come if our loved one doesn’t change course. When I hugged him, he is all skin and bones…so sad.
- We ran into a bunch of our friends, but what stood out was our friend (Robert) whose glasses were missing the sides, and he had them held on to his face with a series of twist ties. We had a pair of glasses in the truck and gave them to him. He said, “these are great, thanks!” The little things we take for granted our friends are wishing for. On our last stop there were some new and old friends. We had to explain that we ran out of packets, but we were able to fix them up with socks, underwear, shorts, and some tee shirts and whatever snacks we had left. There were a lot of granola bars left over but our friends reminded me without teeth they are hard to eat.
“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul”. Mark 8:37
