“I feel the touch of hands so kind and tender, they’re leading me in paths that I must trod, I’ll have no fear ‘cause Jesus walks beside me, for I’m sheltered in the arms of God” lyrics from song, “Sheltered in the Arms of God” by Dottie Rambo

Today we had the privilege of serving 32 people.

  • The morning started out on a sad note that a long-time friend of Jim’s and Terry’s and us for the last two years (Henry), passed away.  Always a bit of a character.  When we asked him if he wanted some Oreos he would quip “Anyone who doesn’t like Oreos is missing out”.  He will be missed.  RIP our friend.
  • We met some new friends this morning who had heard about what we were doing on Saturdays.  One was a woman who called herself (Christie) who claimed to be the boss.  I thought that was interesting and told her, “You look like a bit of a firecracker”!
  • The word has spread on the street about what we are doing on Saturday.  At some of our typical meeting spots we are getting overwhelmed with the number of people who are showing up.  This is causing us to change our meet-up spots frequently.  Hats and gloves were in demand along with sweatpants and sweatshirts.  We met a new friend (Jay) who was in a wheelchair and needed a winter coat.  We gave him a new one and he was very happy and kept thanking us.
  • We were told by our friends (Kathy/Shane), about a friend that had spent the night in their tent and the next day they found him dead in the woods.  I have written about how our friends can become numb to illness and death being on the street after a while.
  • We gave one of our friends a sleeping bag and his excitement reminded me of a kid getting a Christmas present that he really wanted.  This, along with a conversation we had with our friend (Susan) who told us that she worked up at the local mall between two stores.  When asked what the name of the store is where she worked, she replied, “Oh I stand out between the two stores with my cup”.  The strange thing is she really believes this is a job like someone who goes to work every day.  Again, we believe our friends’ value systems get distorted after being on the street for a long period of time.

“I am the bread of life, he who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst” John 6:35
