“How many dreams have I seen burn up like ashes? Smoke from a million memories in my eyes”. Lyrics from song, “Dreams Don’t Lie” by Jelly Roll

Today we had the privilege of serving 38 people.
- We ran into our friend (Bosch) who had the beginnings of frost bite on his finger tips – they were black. He usually never wants anything. When asked, he replies, “let everyone else get what they need first”. This morning, we gave him a pair of winter gloves that fit over his swollen hands. Many of our friends’ hands are swollen because of the cold slowing down the circulation in their hands.
- We had a bright spot this morning running into a new friend (Courtney). She had a bunch of her belongings scattered around her. She told us she had heard we were around on Saturdays but was happy she met us today. We fixed her up with hat, gloves, fleece shirt, socks, snacks and our packet of $10 bill/ $10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card. She told us she has been staying in a tent on the north side of town trying to keep a low profile. She just recently had her pack stolen off her back. When asked where she was from, she replied, “all over”. She at one time lived all over the world, but here she was living in a tent in the woods. She was very upbeat considering her situation. She mentioned she has been clean for a little while now. She has lost some mobility in her right arm and shoulder because of a severe infection. We mentioned for her to go see our friend Peg at L Street Mission to get help with her housing. I hugged her and told her we were glad we met her. Later when we were making our stops, we saw her heading up to L Street. She waved with a big smile yelling out, “this sweatshirt is so warm!” She made our day.
- We talked to Peg this morning and she informed us that the city was going to start removing tents or any encampments. The city had been a little lenient with anyone living outside who could not get into a shelter. We wrote about the shelter situation before. There are those who cannot get into the shelter because it’s full or because they are banned or because they do not feel safe there. We don’t know what the solution is. We worry about some of our friends who sleep in front of the public buildings with overhead protection from rain and snow.
“Those who leave everything in God’s hands will eventually see God’s hand in everything” Proverbs 3:5-6
