“Help me, help me, cause I can’t walk this road alone, and I can’t do this on my own”, lyrics from song “Heaven Help Me” by Zach Williams

Today, we had the privilege of serving 33 people
- We met up with (Tommy) who we had not seen in a while. He told us he had heart surgery. We pulled over and we fixed him up with our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card. He needed socks, underwear, tee shirts. We noticed he had on flip flops, so we asked him if he needed sneakers and he said “oh yes”. We had a pair of Nike sneakers that were donated and were his size. I noticed he had the tattoo “Family” on his forearm. I mentioned my son, Mike, had the same tattoo. Seeing his tattoo put a lump in my throat. I explained to him we lost Mike to an overdose almost 7 years ago. We realize a lot of our friends are so distant from their families because of their lifestyle.
- We met a new friend (Ray) today. He was amazed at what we had to offer him. We gave him Gatorade, snacks, socks, tee shirts along with our packet. With the warm weather there are a lot more of our friends out in the morning now.
- We met up with (Jay) who has been doing better. He told us he had to go to court to clear up an old warrant from a couple of years ago. We were listening when he told us how much fear and anxiety he had about going to court. His friend (Annie) who has been clean and sober for over 3 months now, convinced him not to worry. She told him “God’s got this”. He went to court, and everything worked out.
- There have been more people at our regular stops which doesn’t give us the chance to talk one on one with them. During what small conversations we have, we try and push them to make a change. They are very thankful that we continue to show them we do care about them.
- We sometimes get caught up with wondering if we are making a difference. This question brings to mind a story I heard of a young boy walking along the beach where thousands of starfish had washed up on shore. He was throwing the starfish back in the ocean one by one. A man watching this asked the boy, “Do you really think you are making a difference with all the ones that are still washed up?” The boy threw another starfish in the ocean and turned to the man and said, “I just made a difference to that one” (end of story).
