“Can you picture heaven with no angels singing, or a quiet Sunday morning with no church bells ringing. If you watched as the heart of a child breaks in two”. Lyrics from song, “A Picture of Me Without You” by George Jones.

Today we had the privilege of serving 32 people.

  • We changed up some of our usual meet spots which allows us to spend more time talking to our friends.  We met up with our friends (Jerry, Sammy, Stevie) and we asked them if they had heard about the passing of Carrie.  Our friend (Sammy) asked some questions about her and then suddenly realized who we were talking about and started walking away whispering “Oh my God” and started crying.  We hugged him and told him she is at peace and not suffering anymore; God called her home.  Some of our friends become numb to suffering and loss the longer they live this lifestyle, and other times it hits hard.
  • Socks and underwear were in demand along with snacks and Gatorade.  We met up with a new friend (Scotty) sitting at a bus shelter.  He was with our friends (Dave and Richard).  When we approached, he kept a distance, not knowing what we were doing.  We fixed our friends up with our packet of $10 bill/$10 Dunkin Donuts card/prayer card.  We hadn’t seen Dave in a while and asked where he had been and he replied, “in the hospital”.  We noticed he had bark mulch all over the back of his sweatshirt.  When we asked where he was staying, he pointed to a set of concrete stairs behind a store and asked for a sleeping bag.  Our new friend (Scotty) was still observing us under the bus shelter looking puzzled.  I walked over to him and introduced myself and handed him our packet and asked if he needed any clothes or snacks.  He replied, “I could use a sweatshirt”.  “Sure thing”, I replied.  This helped open the dialogue and then he told us has been staying at the shelter.
  • On our last stop we ran into our friend (James) who is still living in a tent.  When we discussed the loss of our mutual friend, Carrie, he was sad and we kept encouraging him to go back into treatment or he will suffer the same fate.  He promised us he would this week.  We hope and pray.

“Enlighten me, O good Jesus, with the brightness of eternal light, and cast out all darkness from the dwelling of my heart”.  The Imitation of Christ Chapter 23:8
